The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways has received a proposal from the Kerala Maritime Board to build a Multi-Purpose Berth at Ponnani, a non-major port, at an estimated cost of ₹20 crore. In an effort to improve regional connections, increase cruise tourism, and spur economic growth, the Keralan government is thinking of upgrading the port under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Private service providers have been invited to submit an Expression of Interest (EoI) for the purpose of starting cruise ship operations that would link different minor ports and ports in nearby states.
