JSW Energy begins construction of battery storage project in Rajasthan

On Monday, JSW Energy announced that work on a one gigawatt-hour (GWh) battery energy storage system project in Rajasthan’s Fatehgarh had begun.

According to a recent exchange filing by JSW Energy, the company was awarded the project by Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI).

The project comprises of two installations, intended to store for two hours in a single cycle, each having a 500 MWh storage capacity. The project will be constructed using a Build Own Operate and Transfer (BOOT) system, and the corporation stated that after 12 years, ownership will pass to the offtaker.

According to JSW Energy, the project is anticipated to be commissioned by June 2025.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the firm and JSW Steel Ltd. commits the latter to providing an extra 85,000–90,000 tonne of green hydrogen per year and 7,20,000 tonne of green oxygen per year (TPA), gradually by 2030.

“Our Battery Energy Storage System project represents a crucial advancement in enhancing grid stability and integrating renewable energy sources,” stated Sharad Mahendra, Joint Managing Director and CEO of JSW Energy.

In June 2024, JSW Energy commenced the construction of a significant 1 gigawatt-hour (GWh) battery energy storage system (BESS) in Fatehgarh, Rajasthan. This project, awarded by the Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI), underscores JSW Energy’s commitment to bolstering India’s renewable energy infrastructure and enhancing grid stability.

Project Specifications and Structure

The BESS project comprises two installations, each with a 500 megawatt-hour (MWh) storage capacity, designed to provide two hours of energy storage per cycle. This setup enables efficient energy management, allowing for the storage of excess energy.

during periods of low demand and its release during peak consumption times. The project operates under a Build Own Operate and Transfer (BOOT) mechanism, wherein JSW Energy will manage the project for 12 years before transferring ownership to the designated offtaker. The company aims to commission the project by June 2025.

Strategic Importance

The implementation of this BESS is a strategic move to address the intermittency challenges associated with renewable energy sources like solar and wind. By providing a reliable means to store and dispatch energy as needed, the system enhances grid stability and ensures a consistent energy supply. This initiative aligns with India’s broader goals of increasing the share of renewables in its energy mix and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

Collaborative Efforts and Future Plans

In addition to the BESS project, JSW Energy has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with JSW Steel Ltd. This agreement entails the supply of an additional 85,000 to 90,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, along with 720,000 tonnes per annum of green oxygen, progressively by 2030. This collaboration highlights JSW Energy’s commitment to supporting industrial decarbonization and promoting sustainable energy practices across sectors.

Industry Perspective

Sharad Mahendra, Joint Managing Director and CEO of JSW Energy, emphasized the significance of the project, stating, “Our Battery Energy Storage System project represents a crucial advancement in enhancing grid stability and integrating renewable energy sources.” This sentiment reflects the company’s strategic vision to lead in the renewable energy sector and contribute meaningfully to India’s energy transition efforts.

JSW Energy’s initiation of the 1 GWh battery energy storage project in Rajasthan marks a pivotal step in advancing India’s renewable energy infrastructure. By integrating large-scale energy storage solutions, the company is not only addressing current grid challenges but also paving the way for a more resilient and sustainable energy future.
