IndiGo, India’s largest airline, is accelerating its expansion into long-haul international markets through a strategic partnership with Norse Atlantic Airways. The airline has entered into a damp lease agreement to induct four Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft into its fleet, marking a significant milestone in its growth trajectory.
Initial Agreement and Expansion
In early February 2025, IndiGo announced its plan to lease one Boeing 787-9 from Norse Atlantic Airways, with operations slated to commence in March 2025. This initial aircraft is scheduled to serve the Delhi-Bangkok route starting March 1, 2025.
Building upon this foundation, IndiGo has now signed a firm agreement to lease an additional three Boeing 787-9 aircraft from Norse Atlantic. These aircraft are expected to be delivered in the second half of 2025 and will facilitate the launch of new long-haul routes from India to Europe by mid-summer 2025.
Damp Lease Arrangement
The damp lease arrangement entails Norse Atlantic providing the aircraft along with pilots and maintenance services, while IndiGo will supply the cabin crew.
This collaboration allows IndiGo to swiftly augment its wide-body fleet and expand its international network without the lead time required for new aircraft deliveries.
Strategic Implications
IndiGo’s foray into long-haul operations signifies a strategic shift aimed at capturing a larger share of the international travel market, which has been predominantly serviced by Gulf carriers. The introduction of Boeing 787-9 aircraft, known for their fuel efficiency and extended range, enables IndiGo to offer non-stop flights to European destinations, enhancing connectivity for Indian travelers.
Currently, IndiGo operates two wide-body Boeing 777 aircraft, wet-leased from Turkish Airlines, on routes from Delhi and Mumbai to Istanbul.
The addition of the Boeing 787-9s will further diversify IndiGo’s fleet and route offerings, positioning the airline as a formidable competitor in the long-haul segment.
Future Prospects
Looking ahead, IndiGo has ambitious plans to expand its wide-body fleet. The airline has placed an order for 30 Airbus A350-900 aircraft, with deliveries expected to commence in 2027.
This long-term investment underscores IndiGo’s commitment to establishing a robust presence in the international market.
In the interim, the partnership with Norse Atlantic Airways provides a timely solution to meet immediate capacity needs and market demand. As these leased Boeing 787-9s enter service, passengers can anticipate enhanced travel experiences on new non-stop routes between India and Europe, reflecting IndiGo’s dedication to offering affordable and convenient travel options.
