India has achieved a historic milestone by surpassing 100 GW of installed solar power capacity, solidifying its position as a global leader in renewable energy. This achievement is a significant step towards realizing India’s ambitious target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based energy capacity by 2030 set by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.
The country’s solar power sector has seen a 3450% increase in capacity over the past decade, rising from 2.82 GW in 2014 to 100 GW in 2025. As of January 31, 2025, India’s total solar capacity installed stands at 100.33 GW, with 84.10 GW under implementation and 47.49 GW under tendering. The country’s hybrid and round-the-clock (RTC) renewable energy projects are also advancing rapidly, with 64.67 GW under implementation and tendered.
Sringing the total of solar and hybrid projects to 296.59 GW. Solar energy remains the dominant contributor to India’s renewable energy growth, accounting for 47% of the total installed renewable energy capacity. In 2024, a record-breaking 24.5 GW of solar capacity was added, reflecting a more than two-fold increase in solar installations compared to 2023. The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, launched in 2024, is now nearing 9 lakh rooftop solar installations, enabling households across the country to embrace clean energy solutions.
The 8th edition of Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS) 2025 brought together global leaders, policymakers, and industry experts to discuss investment opportunities and economic collaborations. Kalpataru secured redevelopment projects in Mumbai, South Western Railway, and the Waltair Division, aiming to shed its colonial legacy while ensuring administrative continuity.
The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for specialty steel aims to attract investment and enhance value-added steel production in India. The Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) will develop base and land use maps for newly merged mandals, covering 2,456 sq km.
India Achieves Historic Milestone of 100 GW Solar Power Capacity
India has reached a historic milestone by achieving 100 gigawatts (GW) of installed solar power capacity, marking a significant step in the country’s transition towards renewable energy. This achievement underscores India’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and enhancing energy security.
Key Highlights
Massive Growth in Solar Sector: Over the past decade, India has aggressively expanded its solar energy capacity through government initiatives, private sector investments, and international collaborations.
Policy Support: The government’s push through schemes like the Solar Energy Mission and incentives such as Production-Linked Incentives (PLI) has accelerated growth in the sector.
Global Recognition: India now ranks among the top countries in the world for solar energy adoption, reinforcing its position as a leader in sustainable energy.
Factors Driving Solar Expansion
Government Initiatives: Policies like subsidies, tax benefits, and renewable purchase obligations have incentivized solar power projects.
Private Sector Participation: Major corporations and startups are investing heavily in solar infrastructure, boosting both utility-scale and rooftop solar installations.
Declining Costs: Advancements in technology and economies of scale have significantly reduced the cost of solar power generation, making it more viable than traditional energy sources.
Environmental Commitment: India’s push towards achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070 is driving large-scale renewable energy adoption.
Future Outlook
With ambitious targets set under the National Solar Mission, India aims to expand its solar capacity further to 280 GW by 2030. Continued investment, policy support, and technological advancements will be crucial in sustaining this momentum and ensuring a greener, energy-secure future.
