The latest in a string of alliances and financial ventures the two firms are making, Hitachi and Microsoft announced a multibillion-dollar cooperation to hasten the adoption of generative artificial intelligence.
According to a joint announcement from the two firms, the Japanese conglomerate would include Microsoft products, such as GitHub Copilot and Microsoft Cloud, into Lumada, Hitachi’s main digital, software, and services company, as part of the three-year agreement.
With its Lumada division, Hitachi hopes to generate $18.9 billion in revenue in the current fiscal year, which started in April. In the previous fiscal year, the company brought in $15.0 billion in sales.
Hitachi and Google established a cooperation late last month, with the Japanese company setting up a business unit dedicated to assisting companies in resolving industry issues.

In June 2024, Hitachi, Ltd. and Microsoft Corporation announced a strategic partnership projected to be worth multiple billion dollars over three years, aiming to accelerate business and social innovation through the integration of generative AI technologies.

- Integration of Microsoft’s AI Solutions: Hitachi plans to embed Microsoft’s cloud and AI services—including Azure OpenAI Service, Dynamics 365, Copilot for Microsoft 365, and GitHub Copilot—into its Lumada solutions. This integration is designed to enhance Hitachi’s digital offerings across sectors such as energy and mobility, driving better outcomes for businesses and society.
- Investment in AI Training: To support this initiative, Hitachi has committed to investing 300 billion yen (approximately $2.1 billion) in generative AI during the fiscal year 2024. Additionally, the company plans to train over 50,000 “GenAI Professionals” by incorporating Microsoft’s training programs, aiming to bolster its workforce’s AI-related skills.
- Enhancing Employee Productivity: The collaboration will also focus on improving productivity for Hitachi’s 270,000 employees by integrating advanced AI tools into their workflows, thereby fostering innovation and operational efficiency.
This partnership signifies a substantial commitment by both companies to leverage generative AI for transformative solutions, positioning them at the forefront of technological advancement in the industry.
