A new 1,630-kilometer coastal corridor from Umeragm in the south to Narayan Sarovar in Kutch has been suggested by the Gujarati government. In accordance with the GatiShakti plan, it must be finished.
The government has also suggested designating a buffer zone alongside the highway for commercial and industrial activity, and has already set aside the first 300 km, which pass through the districts of Valsad, Navsari, Surat, and Bharuch. A 140km section of the 1,630km total length will be constructed as a greenfield coastal area, and the other 1,490km will be brownfield roads.
A defined area along the corridor will be declared as a buffer area and will be reserved for future development, making it genuinely a coastal highway corridor. The corridor will be at least 10 metres wide and have three driving lanes, although the existing roads are less than five metres wide. The project is expected to cost $2,400 crore and should take three years to complete.
