Govt approves ₹2,700-cr for rejuvenation of Ganga and tributaries

Under the National Mission for Clean Ganga, the Indian government has sanctioned projects costing 2,700 crore for the revitalization of the Ganga River and its tributaries (NMCG). Twelve of the authorised projects are for the construction of sewage infrastructure in the states of West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand. Three projects in Uttar Pradesh received approval, one of which being the $475.19 billion construction of Prayagraj’s sewer system. Projects in Bihar for the towns of Daudnagar and Motihari, with estimated costs of 42.25 crore and 149.15 crore, respectively, were approved. The revitalization of the Adi Ganga River in West Bengal was approved for a price tag of 653.67 crore.

An estimated $808.33 crore project in Jharkhand’s Dhanbad town includes the construction of five sewage treatment plants with a combined capacity to process 192 million litres of waste per day, as well as interception, diversion, and other activities. By utilising all of the drains that flow into the Damodar River, a significant tributary of the Ganga, this initiative seeks to reduce pollution of the river. The central government has given its approval to all initiatives aimed at reducing pollution in Jharkhand’s Damodar River.
