With the Android Chrome browser, Google is now formally releasing a functionality that allows custom tabs to be minimised. Using the Picture-in-Picture (PiP) window, the functionality provides a smoother transition between web content and native apps. This functionality allows for “multitasking across surfaces, enhancing the in-app web browsing experience,” according to a post by Google on the Chromium Blog page.
The only native Android programmes that can access the PiP view of a Chrome custom tab are Google apps like Gmail, Chats, and others. Other apps that open links using the Chrome browser will soon be able to use the capability, although apps like Meta’s Instagram that have built-in browser functionality will not.
How it functions
- Get the most recent version of the Chrome browser.
- Click on any URL that opens in a native Android app, like Google Chats, or that is shared with you. because it still requires you to maximise the window in order to use it. Furthermore, links from the Google Messages app, although being a native Android app, did not give the new minimise button during feature testing.
On Chrome’s toolbar, tap the new downward arrow button that is adjacent to the back button. This makes the Chrome tab that is open in a PiP window smaller in the lower right corner of the screen. To maximise the Chrome tab, tap the window and choose the full screen option that displays in the centre.
The Chrome tab in PiP view can be resized and relocated anywhere on the screen, just like any other floating window. It should be noted, nevertheless, that the Chrome tab in PiP view just displays the page name and domain. This restricts the feature’s functionality.
Google Boosts Multitasking on Android with New Chrome Browser Feature
Google is enhancing multitasking on Android with a new Chrome browser feature designed to improve efficiency and user experience. The latest update introduces tabbed browsing in split-screen mode, allowing users to seamlessly switch between multiple web pages while working on other apps.
Enhanced Multitasking for Productivity
With this upgrade, Android users can now open multiple Chrome windows side by side, just like on a desktop browser. This means they can browse different websites simultaneously, compare information, or even drag and drop content between tabs. The feature is particularly beneficial for professionals, students, and power users who rely on their smartphones and tablets for research, shopping, and work-related tasks.
Key Features of the Update
- Multi-instance Chrome Windows: Users can now open and manage multiple Chrome instances, making multitasking easier than ever.
- Improved Split-Screen Support: Chrome integrates more smoothly with Android’s split-screen mode, ensuring a fluid browsing experience.
- Drag-and-Drop Functionality: Allows users to move text, links, and images between tabs and other apps.
Impact on Android Users
This update makes Android devices more powerful for multitasking, bringing them closer to the desktop experience. Whether it’s comparing products while shopping, taking notes while researching, or keeping multiple work-related tabs open, the enhanced Chrome experience makes juggling tasks simpler and more efficient.
With Google continuously refining Android’s usability, this Chrome update is another step toward a more flexible and productive mobile experience.
