Medhavi Skills University and AIRSC Join Hands to Launch Global Center of Excellence in Rail Safety and Technology

In a groundbreaking move to transform rail safety education and professional development, Medhavi Skills University (MSU) and the All India Rail Safety Council (AIRSC) have signed a landmark MoU to establish a Global Center of Excellence in Rail Safety, Technology, and Management. This initiative will revolutionize skill-based learning and workforce development in India’s railway ecosystem.

Transforming India’s Rail Sector Through the Global Center of Excellence in Rail Safety

The newly established Global Center of Excellence in Rail Safety aims to produce highly skilled professionals who can address the critical challenges of rail infrastructure, safety, and operations. Combining MSU’s education expertise with AIRSC’s safety focus, the center will serve as a model for integrated, future-ready transport education.

According to a PTI report from June 2023, more than 2.74 lakh positions remain unfilled within Indian Railways, with over 1.7 lakh vacancies in the safety category alone. This highlights the pressing need for robust safety training initiatives, which this Global Center of Excellence in Rail Safety aims to fulfill.

“This partnership demonstrates our shared commitment to developing skill-based learning via innovation and industry collaboration,” said Kuldip Sarma, Co-founder and Pro-Chancellor of MSU. “Through the Global Center of Excellence in Rail Safety, we will deliver practical, industry-aligned programs that connect education with real employment outcomes.”

Multidisciplinary, NEP-Aligned Curriculum

Built upon the framework of India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the center will offer industry-relevant undergraduate and postgraduate programs in railway safety, operations, disaster management, and infrastructure technology.

Courses developed by MSU and AIRSC will be delivered via the AIRSC Academy of Safety and Disaster Management, covering:

  • On-the-ground safety protocols
  • Railway technology and modernization
  • Infrastructure project management
  • Disaster mitigation in railway operations

The Global Center of Excellence in Rail Safety will ensure that training is accessible nationwide through online, blended, and in-person delivery formats.

Digital Infrastructure for Scalable Impact

To expand the reach of the initiative, MSU and AIRSC will develop a dedicated digital learning platform. This platform will enable 24/7 access to training content, performance tracking, and student–industry interactions.

By using this model, the Global Center of Excellence in Rail Safety will support learners at:

  • MSU campuses
  • Partner institutions
  • Authorized training centers across India

Leadership Driving Long-Term Vision

Dr. R. Padmanabhan, Chairman of AIRSC, is leading the initiative with a vision to make India’s railway network safer and globally competitive.

“This collaboration with Medhavi Skills University is a strategic step in strengthening railway safety and preparing Indian Railways for a future built on innovation and expertise,” said Dr. Padmanabhan. “The Global Center of Excellence in Rail Safety will help produce a new generation of safety-focused railway professionals.”

Bridging India’s Railway Talent Gap

With the Global Center of Excellence in Rail Safety, MSU and AIRSC are building a long-term solution to India’s critical manpower shortage in railway operations and safety. The collaboration will support:

  • Industry-aligned training
  • On-the-job internships
  • Global employment pathways
  • Research and innovation in transport safety

Potential Impact of the Rail Safety Center of Excellence

The launch of the Global Center of Excellence in Rail Safety is expected to generate long-term benefits for India’s railway ecosystem. It will not only create job-ready professionals but also foster a safety-first culture among future railway personnel. By integrating cutting-edge research and hands-on training, the center will become a benchmark for other sectors looking to improve operational safety through education.

Conclusion

The launch of the Global Center of Excellence in Rail Safety marks a pivotal moment for India’s railway and infrastructure landscape. This strategic partnership not only addresses urgent staffing and safety needs but also lays the groundwork for a globally respected rail safety education ecosystem.
