To make it easier for commuters to use many public transportation options, including buses, metro rail, and others, from a single site, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has chosen to construct multi-modal transport hubs at two important areas, Guindy and Washermenpet. The work will be done as part of the GCC’s Mega Street project.
which aims to rehabilitate municipal streets in order to encourage non-motorized travel. A total of 150 kilometres of roads and related infrastructure will be built gradually. Roads in Guindy, such as Velachery Road, that are behind the Guindy Railway station will also be improved as part of the project. Priority is also being given to improving the roads around Washermenpet Metro Station and Washermenpet Railway Station.
Escalators, pedestrian walkways, skywalks, and other facilities will be built as part of the project to connect several forms of transportation, including MTC. The municipal organisation, the state Highways Department, Southern Railway, and Chennai Metro Rail Limited will all work together to implement the project based on the project report that the authorities have begun to prepare. Guindy and Washermenpet were identified as the main hotspots that experience a significant rush during peak hours after a preliminary examination of the area was done by the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) and the local authorities.
