The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has approved an 8.5-km elevated stretch on the Greenfield Expressway, connecting Faridabad to Jewar International Airport. Construction is commenced near Sector 65, but funding agreement is pending. The project aims for enhanced connectivity and economic growth.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has secured approval to construct an 8.5-kilometer elevated section on the Faridabad-Jewar Expressway, a pivotal infrastructure project aimed at enhancing connectivity between Faridabad in Haryana and the upcoming Noida International Airport in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh.
Project Overview
The Faridabad-Jewar Expressway is a six-lane greenfield project spanning approximately 31.425 kilometers, designed to significantly reduce travel time between Faridabad and Jewar Airport. Currently, the distance between these two points is about 90.
kilometers, with a travel time of nearly two hours. Upon completion of the expressway, this distance will be shortened to 31 kilometers, enabling commuters to traverse it in approximately 15 minutes.
Route and Connectivity
The expressway will commence from the Link Road junction on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway near Sector 65 in Faridabad and extend to the Noida International Airport in Jewar. Along its route, it will intersect with major highways and expressways.
including the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, Yamuna Expressway, Kundli-Ghaziabad-Palwal (KGP) Expressway, and Kundli-Manesar-Palwal (KMP) Expressway, thereby enhancing regional connectivity.
Villages Encompassed
The expressway will traverse several villages, with approximately 22 kilometers falling within Haryana and the remaining 9 kilometers in Uttar Pradesh. In Haryana, the route includes villages such as Chandawali, Sotai, Bahbalpur, Phaphunda, Panhera Khurd.
Narhawali, Mahmadpur, Hirapur, Mohna, and Chhainsa. In Uttar Pradesh, it will pass through Dayanatpur, Vallabhnagar, Karauli Bangar, Farida Bangar, Amarpur, and Jhuppa.
Elevated Section Approval and Financial Implications
The recent approval pertains to constructing an 8.5-kilometer elevated stretch within the expressway. This modification is anticipated to escalate the project’s total cost by approximately 48%, bringing it to around ₹2,450 crore, up from the initial estimate of ₹1,650 crore.
The elevated section aims to address challenges posed by existing infrastructure and residential areas along the proposed route, ensuring minimal disruption and enhanced safety for local communities.
Construction Timeline and Progress
Construction of the Faridabad-Jewar Expressway commenced on June 22, 2023, with an initial completion target set for June 20, 2025. However, the integration of the elevated section, coupled with previous delays due to land acquisition issues and local agitations, may extend the project’s timeline. As of recent reports, approximately 75% of the work remains pending, suggesting that completion may require an additional 18 months beyond the original deadline.
Strategic Importance and Anticipated Benefits
The Faridabad-Jewar Expressway is poised to play a crucial role in bolstering transportation networks within the National Capital Region (NCR). By providing direct connectivity between Faridabad and the Noida International Airport, the expressway is expected to:
- Reduce Congestion: Alleviate traffic on existing routes by offering an alternative, efficient pathway.
- Economic Growth: Stimulate economic development in adjacent regions through improved accessibility.
- Real Estate Development: Enhance the real estate market along the corridor, attracting both residential and commercial investments.
- Regional Connectivity: Strengthen links between major expressways, facilitating smoother transit across the NCR.
The approval of the elevated stretch marks a significant advancement in the Faridabad-Jewar Expressway project. Despite potential delays and increased costs, the project’s completion is anticipated to yield substantial benefits in terms of reduced travel time, economic upliftment, and improved regional connectivity, thereby contributing positively to the infrastructure landscape of the NCR.
