Epiroc to Acquire ASI Mining

The remaining portion of ASI Mining, a supplier of completely autonomous, remote control, and teleoperation mining automation systems, is expected to be acquired by Epiroc. This action is a continuation of an ongoing partnership to implement self-driving mining machinery.

Because ASI’s solutions are OEM agnostic, they are suitable for mixed fleets and function independently of the brand of machine. The company claims that the solutions reduce pollutants and overall operating costs while increasing mine productivity and safety.

The president and CEO of Epiroc, Helena Hedblom, stated in a statement, “Epiroc and the creative team at ASI Mining are already working closely to bring the automation solutions to mining customers.” “We are excited to fully complement their solutions with ours and work with them to continue assisting customers on their automation journey.”

It is anticipated that the acquisition of the remaining portion will be finalised in the third quarter of 2024, subject to regulatory approval from U.S. competition authorities. Epiroc, a global leader in mining and infrastructure equipment, has announced its acquisition of ASI Mining, a move aimed at enhancing its position in autonomous mining solutions. The acquisition underscores Epiroc’s commitment to advancing automation, digitalization, and sustainability in the mining industry.

Expanding Autonomous Mining Capabilities

ASI Mining, a subsidiary of Autonomous Solutions Inc., is a leading provider of autonomous haulage and vehicle control systems. The company specializes in retrofitting mining equipment with automation technology, enabling operations to improve safety, efficiency, and productivity. With this acquisition, Epiroc aims to strengthen its capabilities in providing innovative automation solutions for mining companies worldwide.

Helena Hedblom, President and CEO of Epiroc, emphasized the significance of the deal, stating, “Automation and digitalization are the future of mining, and ASI Mining brings expertise that perfectly complements our existing solutions. Together, we will support mining customers in optimizing operations with safer and more efficient technology.”

Strategic Benefits for Epiroc

The acquisition aligns with Epiroc’s long-term strategy of leading the shift toward sustainable mining practices. By integrating ASI Mining’s technology, Epiroc will expand its offering of autonomous solutions, including self-driving trucks, remote-controlled machinery, and fleet management systems.

The demand for automation in mining has been growing as companies seek to reduce operational costs, enhance worker safety, and minimize environmental impact. ASI Mining’s expertise in retrofitting existing fleets with automation technology allows mining operators to upgrade their equipment without significant capital expenditure on new machinery.

Industry Impact and Future Outlook

The mining sector has been increasingly adopting automation to address labor shortages, improve efficiency, and meet sustainability goals. Epiroc’s acquisition of ASI Mining will likely accelerate the adoption of autonomous technology across various mining operations globally.

While financial details of the acquisition have not been disclosed, the deal is expected to be finalized in the coming months, subject to regulatory approvals. Once completed, ASI Mining will operate as part of Epiroc’s digital and automation division, ensuring a seamless integration of expertise and technology.

With this strategic move, Epiroc solidifies its position as a leader in mining automation, paving the way for the next generation of safer, more efficient, and sustainable mining solutions.
