Thiess Rehabilitation, which began operations in March of this year, has received its first contract, a 3.5-year collaboration with Idemitsu Australia’s Ensham Resources to provide mine rehabilitation solutions that create areas for native bushland corridors and cattle grazing across more than 700 hectares of land.
At the Ensham Mine, east of Emerald in Queensland, the scope of work includes the precise design and construction of the final repaired landforms, topsoiling and seed bed preparation, and sowing of both pasture and native tree species.
To complete the project, the team will use industry-leading landform design approaches in addition to the application of technologies for surveying and seeding.
The contract at the Ensham Mine, according to Thiess Rehabilitation group manager James Anderson, was a suitable way to mark Thiess Rehabilitation’s first project as a stand-alone company.
He added, “We’re particularly eager to cooperate with Idemitsu’s Ensham Resources, who have already accomplished more than 660 hectares of progressive restoration at the mine.
We all agree that mining is about value, and that value can only be fully realised when the land is restored to a sustainable and useable condition.
We’re excited to use our lifelong perspective to design, create, and deliver solutions that will satisfy the demands of our clients and make a lasting impression.
According to Ensham Resources general manager Andy Mifflin, the company is pleased with its achievements in progressive rehabilitation to date and is eager to collaborate with Thiess on the next phase of rehabilitation.
With a total of 663 ha of progressive rehabilitation used for long-term cattle grazing, he said, “We’re very pleased with our achievements to date, including attaining the Queensland Department of Environment and Science’s certification of the largest area of open cut coal mining rehabilitation ever in Queensland.”
Ensham is eager to collaborate with Thiess Recovery to successfully complete the following stage of our progressive rehabilitation.
