DMRC Completes Tunnelling on One of Its Deepest Underground Stretches

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has completed tunnelling on one of the deepest underground sections of Phase IV, with a tunnel boring machine (TBM) breakthrough at IGNOU station on the Aerocity-Tughlaqabad corridor (Golden Line). The newly constructed 1,460-metre-long tunnel runs at an average depth of 27.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has successfully completed tunneling on one of its deepest underground stretches, marking a major milestone in the expansion of the city’s metro network. The breakthrough was achieved as part of the Phase IV expansion, which aims to enhance connectivity and decongest the national capital’s transport infrastructure.

Deepest Metro Tunneling Achieved

The completed tunnel is part of the upcoming metro corridor, which required tunneling at significant depths due to existing infrastructure and geological challenges. The tunnel boring machine (TBM) successfully excavated and critical structures, ensuring minimal disruption to the surface infrastructure.

According to DMRC officials, this particular section required a deep underground alignment to avoid interference with existing metro corridors, railway lines, and other underground utilities. The depth of the tunnel makes it one of the most technically challenging projects undertaken by DMRC so far.

Engineering Challenges and Execution

The tunneling process involved extensive planning, high-precision execution, and the use of state-of-the-art TBMs. Engineers and geotechnical experts continuously monitored soil conditions and adjusted the tunneling approach accordingly. Special reinforcement techniques were employed to stabilize the tunnel and mitigate ground settlement risks.

One of the key challenges faced during tunneling was the presence of rocky and mixed-soil strata, which required specialized cutting tools. Additionally, the passage under existing metro lines and densely populated neighborhoods necessitated advanced vibration and noise control measures to prevent any structural impact.

Significance of the Project

The completion of tunneling on this deep underground stretch is a crucial step towards the timely completion of the Phase IV expansion. This new corridor is expected to improve metro connectivity in key areas, reduce travel time, and provide commuters with a seamless and efficient transit experience.

With this milestone achieved, DMRC will now move forward with track laying, electrical installations, and station development, bringing Delhi closer to an expanded and modernized metro network.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has completed tunneling on one of its deepest underground stretches as part of its Phase IV expansion. The tunnel, built using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), navigated complex geological conditions and existing infrastructure with precision.

The project required advanced engineering techniques to ensure stability and minimal surface disruption. This milestone marks a significant step in enhancing Delhi’s metro connectivity, reducing travel time, and improving public transport efficiency. With tunneling completed.
