Delhi PWD Inspects 102 Flyovers for Repairs

The Public Works Department (PWD) is conducting a large-scale inspection of 102 flyovers in Delhi, deploying five teams to assess structural and maintenance issues. Repair work is set to begin based on the findings, following a meeting with Delhi’s Minister Parvesh Verma. The inspection will evaluate each flyover’s cleanliness, tiling, painting, and lighting.

Budget estimates will be prepared to prioritize repairs based on available funds. The Public Works Department (PWD) of Delhi has initiated a comprehensive inspection of 102 flyovers under its jurisdiction, aiming to assess their structural integrity and identify necessary repair and maintenance requirements. This proactive measure underscores the department’s commitment to ensuring the safety and efficiency of the city’s infrastructure.

Formation of Inspection Teams

To facilitate this extensive evaluation, the PWD has constituted five dedicated teams comprising a total of 15 officials. Each team is tasked with conducting thorough surveys of the assigned flyovers, focusing on various structural and aesthetic aspects. The inspections are scheduled to be completed promptly, with detailed reports to be submitted to the PWD secretary by Thursday.

Scope of Inspection

The inspection teams are meticulously examining several critical components of each flyover, including:

  • Cleanliness: Ensuring that the flyovers are free from debris and waste, which can affect both aesthetics and structural health.
  • Tiling and Painting: Assessing the condition of surface tiles and paintwork to maintain visual appeal and protect structural elements from environmental factors.
  • Encroachments: Identifying unauthorized occupations or constructions that may impede maintenance activities or compromise safety.

The comprehensive reports will include photographic evidence of each flyover’s condition, highlighting specific issues that require attention.

Strategic Planning and Resource Allocation

Upon receipt of the inspection reports, the PWD will undertake a strategic planning process to address the identified issues. This will involve prioritizing repair and maintenance tasks based on the severity of the findings and allocating appropriate funds to ensure timely execution.

Historical Context and Ongoing Efforts

This recent initiative is part of a broader, ongoing effort by the PWD to maintain and enhance Delhi’s infrastructure. In previous years, similar inspections have been conducted, focusing on structures older than 15 years to assess their load-bearing capacities and identify any structural deficiencies.

Routine maintenance tasks, such as painting, desilting, re-carpeting, pothole repairs, road marking, and signage updates, have been consistently carried out to ensure the longevity and safety of these structures.

Recent Repair Initiatives

In addition to the current inspections, the PWD has outlined plans to undertake repair work on several key flyovers in the coming months. Notably, the Sarita Vihar flyover’s repair work is nearing completion, and similar efforts are planned for the Zakhira, Raja Garden, and Shadipur flyovers.

Approvals for these repairs are in progress, with significant works such as expansion joint replacement and bearing changes requiring detailed planning and potential traffic diversions. The PWD’s systematic inspection of 102 flyovers demonstrates a proactive approach to infrastructure.

Management, emphasizing safety, functionality, and aesthetic appeal.
