Decks have been cleared for the Chennai Port-Maduravoyal double-decker road project. Around 9 km of the 20.5-km stretch will traverse through the Cooum river. An MoU has been signed between the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the TN government.

The elevated corridor will have a capacity to handle 40,000 passenger car units a day. Of the 125 piers, 110 will be retained and of the 20.5-km stretch, the corridor will be limited to 14km. A study will be undertaken on the orientation of internal roads in the port so it will not impact vehicular movement.
