The Tamil Nadu government has issued a no-objection certificate (NOC), clearing the way for NHAI to begin construction work on expanding the existing two-lane 105-kilometer East Coast Road (ECR) between Mahabalipuram and Pondicherry to four lanes. The NOC had been stalled because the Tamil Nadu Road Development Corporation, which maintains the ECR, demanded 222 crore in compensation for handing over the required land, but the NHAI refused to pay, and road work was halted despite the fact that 3,000 crore had been sanctioned under the Bharatmala Pariyojana scheme.
