Curb illegal sand mining in Sharavathi river: NGT tells Karnataka govt

Bengaluru: The State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) and the Department of Mines and Geology have been instructed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to cease any illicit sand mining in the coastal zone of the Sharavathi River.

Judge Pushpa Sathyanarayana and expert member Satyagopal Korlapati of the NGT’s southern zone bench were deliberating on an application pertaining to harm inflicted by illicit sand mining on the local flora and fauna.

Before the tribunal, the SEIAA argued that no party had received environmental approval for sand mining on the Sharavathi Illegal sand mining has been a persistent issue in the region, leading to soil erosion, damage to aquatic habitats, and disruption of water flow.
