The Coimbatore mass rapid transit system (metro rail project), which will cost $9,424 crore, has being expedited by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL). By 2027, the project is anticipated to be finished.

Two corridors have been planned for the first phase, the first of which will run for 31.73 km from Park Plaza to the airport, via Ukkadam Bus Stand, from Vellalore Bus Terminal to PSG Foundry.

The second corridor will connect Valliyampalayam Pirivu with the Collectorate Metro (distance of 14.13 km) The feasibility and full project study for the Chennai mass rapid transit system to connect Tambaram and Velachery involves a cost of 3,953 crores and it would be finished by 2026–2027, according to Public Information Officer (PIO) and Manager (Legal) of CMRL M Amala. At a cost of 4,528 crore, Chennai Metro Phase 1 Extension of Corridor 1 from Airport to Kilambakkam Bus Terminus is anticipated to be finished in 2026.
