In an effort to increase road connections to Assam, Mizoram, and Tripura, the Centre has authorized ₹24,000 crore for the construction of a four-lane road that will run from Umiam to Silchar via the East Jaintia Hills district.
The building of a four-lane highway with the goal of improving access to Assam, Mizoram, and Tripura via the East Jaintia Hills district and Umiam.
Of the total, ₹12,000 crore has been approved for the construction of a 100-kilometer section in Meghalaya that will connect Umiam and Malidor. Through this project.
Guwahati in Assam would be connected to Silchar, Mizoram, and Tripura. The remaining ₹12,000 crore would be used to build the remaining four lanes of the Assamese highway. The current National Highway-6, which is in terrible shape in several places in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills area, will be replaced with the new four-lane road.
In July 2024, the Indian government approved a substantial investment of ₹24,000 crore for the construction of a four-lane highway connecting Umiam in Meghalaya to Silchar in Assam. This strategic infrastructure project aims to enhance connectivity across the northeastern states, particularly benefiting Assam, Mizoram, and Tripura.
Project Breakdown
The allocated funds are divided equally between Meghalaya and Assam:
- Meghalaya Segment: ₹12,000 crore is designated for constructing a 100-kilometer stretch from Umiam to Malidor, located near the Meghalaya-Assam border. This allocation also covers compensation for land acquisition.
- Assam Segment: The remaining ₹12,000 crore is earmarked for extending the four-lane road from Malidor to Silchar within Assam’s territory.
Strategic Importance
The existing National Highway-6 (NH-6), which traverses the East Jaintia Hills district in Meghalaya, has been plagued by deteriorating conditions, leading to frequent travel disruptions. The new four-lane highway is poised to replace this segment of NH-6, offering a more reliable and efficient route. This development is expected to significantly improve road connectivity to the Barak Valley in Assam, as well as the neighboring states of Mizoram and Tripura.
Meghalaya’s Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong, emphasized the project’s regional impact, stating that it will facilitate smoother travel from Meghalaya to Silchar, Mizoram, and Tripura, while also enhancing the connection to Guwahati in Assam.
Additional Developments
In response to the current challenges faced by commuters on NH-6, the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, approved an additional ₹290 crore in June 2024 for immediate repairs and improvements on the stretch from Lumshnong to Malidor in the East Jaintia Hills district. This interim measure aims to alleviate travel difficulties until the completion of the new four-lane highway.
The approval of the ₹24,000 crore four-lane highway from Umiam to Silchar marks a significant milestone in bolstering infrastructure and connectivity in India’s northeastern region. Upon completion, this project is anticipated to not only reduce travel time and enhance safety for commuters but also stimulate economic growth by facilitating smoother movement of goods and people across state borders.
