Center rolls out ₹1,34,200-cr infra building plans for NE

The Centre is undertaking several rail, road, and air connectivity projects worth 1,34,200 crore in the whole northeastern area, according to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. It is now working on 20 railway projects costing 74,000 crore that span 2,011 km across the region, as well as 4,000 km of roads worth 58,000 crore and 15 ongoing air connectivity projects totaling 2,200 crore in the northeast. As part of a five-year assessment, the number of Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Routes has been increased from eight to ten.

The Union government is also building the National Waterways on the Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Barak rivers, since Bangladesh has 50 riverine systems that can be used for all sorts of transportation because water travel is less expensive than air, road, and train travel. As part of the construction of a multimodal hub on the Brahmaputra in Guwahati, the entire area between Sadiya and Dhubri in Assam along the Brahmaputra river is being developed for enhanced connectivity. Pandu has a ship repair port, four tourist jetties, and eleven floating terminals. When fully operational, the Eastern Waterways Connectivity Transport Grid will provide continuous connectivity not only between the northeast and the rest of India, but also across the subcontinent.
