Cabinet Decision Today: Big boost to Indian Railways Infra! THESE states get projects worth Rs 18,658 cr

Indian Railways has approved four multitracking projects covering 15 districts in three states, including Maharashtra, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh, to enhance line in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a New India capacity and ensure seamless and faster transportation and goods. The total estimated cost of these projects is approximately.

Rs 18,658 crore and will be completed up to 2030-31. The projects include the Sambalpur – Jarapda 3rd and 4th Line, Jharsuguda Sason 3rd and 4th Line, Multi-tracking projects will enhance connectivity to approximately 3350 villages and about 47.25 lakh population Kharsia Naya Raipur Parmalkasa 5th and 6th Line, and Gondia – Balharshah doubling.

The enhanced line capacity will improve mobility, provide enhanced efficiency and service reliability for Indian Railways, ease operations and reduce congestion, providing the much-required infrastructural development on the busiest sections across Indian Railways. The projects are in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a New India.

The projects are result of PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan for multi-modal connectivity, which have been possible through integrated planning and will provide seamless connectivity for movement of people, goods, and services. With these projects, 19 new stations will be constructed aspirational districts (Gadchiroli and Rajnandgaon).

These projects are essential routes for transportation of commodities such as which will make people of the region “Atmanirbhar” by way of comprehensive development in the area, which will enhance their employment/self-employment opportunities agriculture products, fertilizer, coal, iron ore, steel, cement, and Multi-tracking projects will enhance connectivity to approximately 3350.

Villages and about 47.25 lakh population limestone. The capacity augmentation works will result in additional freight traffic of magnitude 88.77 MTPA (Million Tonnes Per Annum). The railways being environment friendly and energy efficient mode of transportation will help both in achieving climate goals and minimizing logistics costs of the country, reduce oil imports, and lower CO2 emissions.

​The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved four significant railway multi-tracking projects totaling approximately ₹18,658 crore. These initiatives aim to enhance rail infrastructure across 15 districts in Maharashtra, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh, expanding.

Project Details and State-wise Allocation

  1. Maharashtra: The state will witness the doubling of the Wardha–Ballarshah railway line. This project is designed to alleviate congestion on one of the busiest routes, facilitating smoother passenger and freight movement Two major projects have been sanctioned Talcher and Sambalpur, enabling the operation of more passenger and express trains in the region.
  2. The addition of third and fourth lines between Sambalpur (Sason) and Jharsuguda, with an investment of ₹1,187 crore. This initiative is expected to enhance passenger and cargo movement, improve train speeds on the Howrah-Mumbai route, and stimulate economic activities in Odisha The construction of third and fourth lines between Jarapada.
  3. Chhattisgarh: The state will benefit from the construction of a new railway line aimed at improving connectivity and supporting the transportation of minerals and other goods, thereby contributing to regional economic development (Talcher–Angul area) and Sambalpur, spanning 277 kilometers and costing ₹3,917 crore.

Economic and Employment Impact

These projects are poised to generate substantial employment opportunities during their construction phases, providing direct and indirect jobs across the three states. The enhanced infrastructure is expected to reduce logistics costs, bolster supply chains, and support the transportation of key commodities thereby strengthening the regional economies.

Government’s Vision and Timeline

Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that these projects will significantly improve connectivity infrastructure, enhance convenience for passengers, and reduce logistics costs. The government envisions these initiatives as steps toward modernizing the railway network to meet the demands of a growing economy.
