Following the election of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, there was a significant drive to acquire property for the BKC bullet train station. Due to a dispute between the state and the Center, the land purchase process was stalled during the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra.
As of February 2025, the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) high-speed railway station in Mumbai is under active construction as part of the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor. This station, the only underground one on the corridor, is designed to serve as the southern terminus of the line.
Project Timeline and Developments
- July 2022: The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) re-invited tenders for the design and construction of the BKC station under Package C1. This package encompasses the underground station, a cut-and-cover tunnel, and associated works.
- November 2022: Four bidders submitted proposals for the project.
- December 2022: The joint venture of Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) and Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Limited (MEIL) secured the contract, valued at ₹3,681 crore.
Current Status
As of early 2025, construction is progressing, with significant milestones achieved, including the completion of key shafts and the initiation of tunneling activities. The project remains on track for its projected completion in 2028.
Station Features
The BKC station is designed to include:
- Platforms: Six platforms, each 415 meters long, accommodating 16-coach bullet trains.
- Connectivity: Direct links to Mumbai Metro lines and other public transportation modes, enhancing commuter convenience.
- Amenities: Modern facilities such as ticketing counters, waiting areas, business lounges, and retail spaces.
The station’s strategic location in Mumbai’s commercial hub aims to bolster economic growth and streamline travel between Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
The BKC high-speed railway station is a pivotal component of India’s inaugural bullet train project. Despite initial delays, concerted efforts by NHSRCL and the HCC-MEIL consortium have propelled the project forward, with completion anticipated by 2028. This development is poised to revolutionize travel dynamics and stimulate economic progress in the region.
