BRO to take up ₹574-cr border road widening project in Uttarakhand

With an expenditure of $574 crore, the Union Transport Ministry has approved widening the 51-kilometer national highway from Mana hamlet in Mana Pass, Uttarakhand, to the India-China border. The Border Road Organization will extend the road to two lanes over the next few years to facilitate better and more efficient army movement.

The existing segment, which was designated as an NH in January of this year, is currently a single-lane road that is only just motorable in certain places. With the enlargement, realignments, and remediation of vulnerable areas, the road will be able to accommodate army vehicles all year long at its design speed of 40 kmph.

In addition, the widening of this route will greatly increase religious tourism to Deo Taal and be useful for trekking and climbing activities. From the middle of December until April, the distance between Mana and Mana Pass is covered with snow on average, falling 8 to 10 feet. Only the months of May through November are suitable for construction work. Since this region is uninhabited, acquiring land and moving people won’t be a problem.
