With investments totaling 14,788 crore, BMRCL has accelerated the construction of the Kempegowda International Airport metro line. The land acquisition process is nearly finished, allowing the contractor to expedite construction of the 30 station, 5-7 km long track from Central Silk Board to the airport. Due to tree relocation, construction between Hebbal and KR Puram has been slightly delayed.
In the future, the Hebbal Station, which will serve as an interchange, may see as many as 60,897 commuters each day. KR Puram, another interchange station, is anticipated to receive 51,983 commuters, followed by Nagawara, 50,470, KIA Terminal, 30,647, Yelahanka, 24,013, and Kodigehalli, 20,288. The Shettigere Depot’s revised plan still calls for an additional area of 12,576.619 sq m, for which BMRCL is looking into other options. By December 2024, the airport line is anticipated to be completed.
MMRDA Ready to Start Work on Tallest Elevated Metro Corridor
In a major leap toward modernizing Mumbai’s transportation network, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is set to begin construction on the city’s tallest elevated metro corridor. The project, which is poised to redefine Mumbai’s skyline and urban mobility, will feature elevated metro stations and tracks towering over the city’s dense urban landscape. This ambitious metro corridor aims to alleviate the city’s chronic traffic congestion, enhance public transport accessibility, and contribute significantly to the overall development of Mumbai’s infrastructure.
Project Overview
The upcoming metro corridor, which will be part of the Mumbai Metro Line 5, will be the tallest elevated metro corridor in the city, reaching a height of approximately 20 meters above ground. The metro line will run between Thane and Kalyan, two of the fastest-growing suburbs in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). This project, which is expected to cost several thousand crore rupees, will extend over a distance of around 24 kilometers and serve some of the most populous areas of Mumbai’s eastern suburbs.
The metro corridor will be built to accommodate increasing passenger demand and provide a much-needed solution to the city’s traffic woes. Mumbai, known for its dense population and bustling streets, suffers from severe traffic congestion, particularly during rush hours. This elevated metro corridor will offer a fast, efficient, and eco-friendly alternative to traditional modes of transport, ensuring a smoother and more comfortable commute for thousands of Mumbaikars.
Features of the Tallest Elevated Metro Corridor
The elevated metro line will consist of a series of high-rise pillars supporting the tracks, making it an imposing addition to Mumbai’s already dense infrastructure. This design is necessary to ensure that the metro line does not disrupt existing roads and buildings, while still providing an efficient solution to public transport needs. The new elevated line will include a combination of elevated stations and underground sections to optimize land use and minimize displacement.
The metro corridor will feature state-of-the-art amenities, including air-conditioned coaches, automated ticketing systems, and modern safety features to ensure a smooth, comfortable, and secure to communcation travel experience. The high pillars supporting the metro line will be designed to minimize their environmental impact, with careful consideration of the city’s aesthetics.
Addressing Traffic Congestion
One of the primary goals of the tallest elevated metro corridor is to tackle Mumbai’s severe traffic congestion, particularly in the eastern suburbs of Thane and Kalyan. These areas have witnessed rapid urbanization over the years, with growing populations and increasing vehicle ownership. As a result, roads are frequently clogged with traffic, leading to long commutes, pollution, and a decrease in overall productivity.
