Bhimber Gali Tunnel Work Begins with Inaugural Blast

The Bhimber Gali Tunnel, a 1.1 km project connecting Kalali to Bhataduria, has been inaugurated, marking a significant milestone in the 16.1 km highway project. The tunnel, which will reduce the highway’s length by 10.8 km, will improve connectivity between strategic locations and strengthen the Border Roads Organisation’s commitment to strengthening connectivity and defence infrastructure in remote areas.

On March 3, 2025, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) initiated the construction of the Bhimber Gali Tunnel with an inaugural blast, marking a significant milestone in enhancing connectivity along National Highway 144A in Jammu and Kashmir.

Project Overview

The Bhimber Gali Tunnel, spanning 1.1 kilometers, is a critical component of a 16.1-kilometer infrastructure project connecting Kalali in Rajouri district to Bhataduria in Poonch district. This initiative aims to provide an alternative route for both civilian traffic and military logistics, ensuring smoother and more reliable connectivity through the challenging terrains of the Pir Panjal region.

Strategic Importance

The tunnel’s strategic significance lies in its potential to facilitate swift movement of Army troops in the border districts of Rajouri and Poonch. By bypassing treacherous stretches prone to landslides and adverse weather conditions, the tunnel will enhance operational readiness and logistical efficiency for defense forces.

Integration with NH 144A Development

The Bhimber Gali Tunnel is part of a broader development plan for National Highway 144A, also known as the ‘Golden Arc’ road, which connects Akhnoor to Poonch. This highway encompasses four major tunnels:

  • Kandi Tunnel: Currently under construction, with a length of 260 meters.
  • Bhimber Gali Tunnel: Construction commenced with the recent inaugural blast.

These tunnels collectively aim to improve connectivity across the border districts of Akhnoor, Rajouri, and Poonch, reducing travel time and enhancing safety for commuters.

Construction and Future Prospects

The commencement of the Bhimber Gali Tunnel construction underscores the BRO’s commitment to developing critical infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir. The project’s completion is expected to bolster economic activities, promote tourism, and improve the quality of life for residents in the region.

In summary, the initiation of the Bhimber Gali Tunnel construction represents a pivotal advancement in strengthening the infrastructural framework of Jammu and Kashmir, with far-reaching implications for both civilian and military stakeholders.
