Asia’s Longest River Bridge Nears Completion in Bihar
Bihar is all set to make history as Asia’s longest river bridge, being built over the Kosi River, nears completion. This massive bridge will connect Bheja in Madhubani district to Bakour in Supaul district, and is expected to be ready by December 2025. The bridge is around 10.02 kilometers long over the river, and when combined with the approach roads, the total length becomes approximately 13.3 kilometers. It is a major part of the Bharatmala Project, which aims to boost road connectivity across India.
Shorter Travel and Better Connectivity
Right now, people traveling between Madhubani and Supaul have to take a longer route via Kishanpur and Saraigarh, which is time-consuming and difficult, especially during the monsoon season. This new bridge will reduce the distance by about 30 kilometers, cutting travel time and making journeys faster and smoother. The new route will bring down the total travel distance to around 44 kilometers.
Engineering Marvel with Strong Design
The bridge is not only long, but also built to be strong. It has 171 pillars and 70 spans, most of which are already completed. Engineers are using advanced technology to ensure that the bridge can withstand heavy rains and flooding, which are common in the Kosi region. Even though there was a girder collapse in March 2024, which caused a delay, the work resumed quickly with better safety measures.
A Boon for Flood-Prone Areas
The Kosi region in Bihar is known for its floods and poor connectivity. During monsoon season, many villages in this area get cut off from the rest of the state. This bridge will act as a lifeline for people, giving them access to hospitals, schools, and markets throughout the year. It will help farmers, students, traders, and ordinary citizens reach their destinations without fear of being stranded during floods.
Boost to Economy and Trade
Once completed, the bridge will not only help locals but also benefit trade between India and Nepal, and even improve road access to the Northeast states. It will allow smooth transportation of goods and encourage businesses to invest in the region. Small industries, transport services, and local shops are likely to grow, giving more job opportunities to people in the area.
Additional Infrastructure
Along with the bridge, the project includes 3.1 km of approach roads, two underpasses, four culverts, six bus stops, and a toll plaza. These additions are designed to handle traffic efficiently and provide all necessary services for travelers. The bridge is being constructed at a total cost of ₹1,200 crore, with ₹1,102 crore going into civil construction.
Record-Breaking Structure
When finished, this bridge will become India’s and Asia’s longest river bridge, surpassing the Bhupen Hazarika Setu (Dhola-Sadiya bridge in Assam), which is 9.15 km long. The Kosi River bridge will be a proud symbol of progress for Bihar and for India’s growing infrastructure capabilities.
A New Era for Bihar
This bridge marks the beginning of a new chapter for Bihar’s development. It is expected to save more than one hour of travel time, reduce fuel consumption, and improve the daily lives of thousands of people. By connecting two major districts and opening up trade routes, it is set to transform the economy of north Bihar.
In conclusion, the Kosi River Bridge is not just a road—it’s a path to progress for millions. It shows how thoughtful infrastructure can improve lives, create jobs, and build a better future. With completion expected in late 2025, Bihar is gearing up for a historic achievement that will connect hearts, lands, and opportunities like never before.
