Google CEO: “AI has the potential to create equal opportunities for everyone.”
Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Alphabet and Google, thinks artificial intelligence has a lot of promise to level the playing field and provide most people equal opportunity. During Google I/O, the company’s annual developer conference, Pichai spoke with foreign media about AI’s potential to provide universal access to services that are presently out of reach for many people because of budgetary limitations.
Pichai compared the effects of AI to those of the internet. “AI can ensure knowledge and services are available to everyone, just as the internet reached everyone regardless of their geographical location or background,” the speaker stated. The ability of the internet to give everyone worldwide access to information served as inspiration for the CEO of Google.
According to Pichai, personalised education through intelligent tutoring systems and accessible healthcare through virtual consultations with AI assistants are just a couple of the sectors where AI may generate more equitable opportunities. AI has the potential to democratise services like one-on-one tutoring and regular medical visits, which are now only accessible to a tiny portion of the population.
Discussions on how to create governance guidelines for AI advancement while defending public interests are now being conducted by civil society organisations and regulators. As it moves towards a “AI-first” strategy, Google recently unveiled plans at its I/O event to incorporate AI into key products like Gmail and Search using recently built language models.
For the benefit of billions, Google and other leaders in the business are aiming to implement the most sophisticated AI systems. Pichai stated, “Our objective is to use technology at scale to improve people’s lives.” Google is still dedicated to its goal of organising the world’s knowledge and making it widely accessible through technology, even if the realisation of this vision of AI being accessible to everyone will rely on how bias, privacy, and security concerns are resolved.
