Adani Ports Orders ₹450 Cr Tugs from Cochin Shipyard

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) has ordered eight conventional harbor tugs from Cochin Shipyard Ltd for ₹450 crore. The agreement excludes environmentally beneficial technology, even though the Union government has pushed for a green tug transition program.

Green technology like electric propulsion and alternative fuels are a good fit for harbor tugs, which are essential for berthing and ship assistance. These developments have the potential to drastically cut emissions without sacrificing efficiency, but the existing system has passed on this chance.

Adani Ports Orders ₹450 Crore Tugs from Cochin Shipyard

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. (APSEZ), one of India’s largest port operators, has placed an order worth ₹450 crore for tugboats from Cochin Shipyard Ltd. (CSL). The order, which marks a significant step in APSEZ’s plans to enhance its maritime operations, includes the construction of high-performance tugboats that will be used at Adani’s ports across the country.

Project Details

The contract involves the design, construction, and delivery of multiple tugboats that are expected to play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of ports. These tugboats will be deployed to assist in mooring, unmooring, and maneuvering vessels, particularly large ships, during the docking and undocking processes.

  • Tugboats Design and Features: The tugboats will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology and powerful engines, enabling them to navigate in various sea conditions, including during high winds or rough seas. They will be environmentally friendly, adhering to the latest IMO (International Maritime Organization) standards for reducing emissions and ensuring sustainability in port operations.
  • Construction Timeline: Cochin Shipyard is expected to complete the delivery of the tugboats within the next two years, in alignment with APSEZ’s growing demand for maritime services and its ongoing efforts to modernize its port infrastructure.

Significance for Adani Ports

The purchase of these tugboats is an important investment for APSEZ as it works to strengthen its port operations and expand its fleet of marine vessels. The new tugboats will improve operational efficiency and safety at the company’s ports, especially as Adani Ports continues to grow its presence in the Indian and global maritime logistics market.

Adani Ports operates multiple ports across India, including Mundra Port, Dahej Port, and Dhamra Port, and the acquisition of advanced tugboats will enhance their ability to handle a wider range of vessels, from large cargo ships to oil tankers and container vessels.

Partnership with Cochin Shipyard

This order strengthens the partnership between Adani Ports and Cochin Shipyard, a renowned public sector shipbuilding and maintenance company. CSL is well known for its expertise in designing and constructing high-quality vessels, particularly in the tug and offshore sectors. Cochin Shipyard’s track record in delivering advanced maritime solutions makes it an ideal partner for Adani Ports in its efforts to upgrade its fleet.

Economic and Operational Impact

The acquisition of these new tugboats will not only improve operational efficiency at Adani’s ports but will also create local employment opportunities in the shipbuilding sector. This move is aligned with India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, which promotes local manufacturing and technological advancement in key sectors.
