Decks cleared for ₹75,000 cr international port in Nicobar

On 16,610 hectares of pristine forest on the Great Nicobar Island, the Union government has approved spending of Rs. 75,000 crore for the development of a greenfield international port, an international container transshipment terminal, a city, and power plants. The project has received approval from the ministry of the environment’s Expert Appraisal Committee on Infrastructure Projects. The EAC has deemed the Nicobar megapode a keystone species of the Nicobar Island, and 30 of its 51 active nests will be permanently removed. For the unique species, mangroves, corals, and other wildlife, in addition to a number of other restrictions, the EAC has enforced specific “conservation and management plans” and significant funding. There will be three independent committees established: one to manage biodiversity and Shompen issues, another to handle pollution-related issues, and a third to oversee welfare.
