Cepsa and Ohmium announce agreement for advanced green hydrogen technology

Ohmium International, a business specialising in the design, production, and deployment of PEM electrolyzers, and Cepsa, a global organisation dedicated to sustainable mobility and energy, have announced a partnership to create highly effective green hydrogen projects in the Iberian Peninsula.

Together, the businesses will design and construct small-scale projects with the goal of creating a green hydrogen platform using Ohmium’s cutting-edge modular PEM electrolyzers, with the potential to give Cepsa access to up to 300 MW of installed hydrogen production capacity. The two businesses will collaborate on research and development projects involving green hydrogen under the terms of the agreement.

“We at Cepsa have many years of experience in the production and handling of energy sources via molecules,” said Carlos Barrasa, director of commercial & clean energies at Cepsa. This experience gives us a competitive edge as we make the switch to green hydrogen, and our partnership with Ohmium will further improve the efficiency of the hydrogen production process, which is essential for cost competitiveness.

The CEO of Ohmium International, Arne Ballantine, continued, “Cepsa is a pioneer in the energy sector and a genuinely visionary company. Their Positive Motion plan, which outlines the Iberian Peninsula’s transition to a greener and more sustainable economy and calls for the establishment of 2 GW of green hydrogen production in Spain and Portugal by 2030, is evidence of this.

Cepsa’s Positive Motion plan explicitly acknowledges that green hydrogen is the best way to decarbonize a variety of industries, including complex industries like heavy transport, aviation, and maritime traffic, by including ambitious goals for green hydrogen production. It will be essential to replace “grey” hydrogen with affordable renewable hydrogen, which is zero-carbon hydrogen produced from water electrolysis using renewable energy sources. Green hydrogen can also directly increase the energy security and independence of the local and regional economies. Conflicts have the potential to destabilise the global energy supply chain, but green hydrogen can be produced locally at a reasonable cost when the right renewable energy sources are available.
