At the LRT’s inaugural event, which was also attended by Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Chinese Ambassador to Egypt Liao Liqiang, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi took the first trip on the LRT.

The National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) and the group of China Railway Engineering Corporation and AVIC International Holding Corporation inked a $1.24 billion contract for the LRT project in August 2017. (CREC-AVIC INTL Consortium).

In the first phase of the LRT project, the Hassan Allam subsidiaries Hassan Allam Construction and Hassan Allam Roads & Bridges successfully completed three stations, two light rail transit bridges, and one tunnel. Three stations totaling more than 8,000 square metres each were part of the project’s scope: the Capital Airport station, the Capital Gardens stations, and the Arts and Culture City station (a transfer point for Egypt’s monorail, which is still under construction).

With a daily capacity of almost 1 million people, the new LRT line would connect the New Administrative Capital with a number of Cairo cities, including Al Salam, Al Shorouk, 10th of Ramadan, New Heliopolis, and Al Mostakbal. It will also connect to the Ain Al Sokhna highway.

The initial phase of the LRT, according to Egyptian Transport Minister Kamel el-Wazir, will include 22 trains and carry 360,000 people each day. The 12-stop LRT alignment, which includes seven bridges, three tunnels, two substations, and one depot, travels from the massive Adly Mansour central station, a major transportation centre east of Cairo, to the NAC. There are multiple phases to the LRT project, which has 19 stations and a total length of around 103 kilometres.

With 12 stations, the recently inaugurated phase spans around 70 kilometres. Future phases would include a south expansion with four stations covering approximately 18.5 kilometres, and a north extension with three stations covering approximately 16 kilometres.

LRT, a cutting-edge mode of transportation that was pioneered in Egypt, is another achievement for Hassan Allam Holding in the field of transportation infrastructure.
