The Victoria Memorial Hall has been cleared for the Joka-Esplanade Metro project, allowing for the building of the Victoria Memorial Metro station and subterranean tunnelling going up to the station underneath the Maidan area. The state government had originally requested that Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), the Joka-Esplanade Metro corridor’s implementing agency, remove the Victoria Memorial station in the interest of both the Metro and the Victoria Memorial. The state later approved the proposed station in front of the Victoria Memorial, subject to the Victoria Memorial Hall’s approval (VMH).
In a PIL relating to prohibitions prohibiting building work inside 100 metres of the Victoria Memorial’s perimeter, the Calcutta High Court cleared the 5.6km Mominpore-Esplanade underground leg of the corridor. The board received the tunnelling effect assessment (vibration study) report from RVNL, forwarded it to the experts, and awarded a provisional NOC based on the experts’ technical observations. As a result, when the real work begins, careful supervision will be required.
