CMRL launches longest metro station under Phase-II

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has begun work on the Light House station, which will not only be the first shallow underground station with a platform on the first level and a mini-concourse on the second, but will also be the longest station in phase 2 with a length of more than 300 metres.

As it is an important terminal station for the stretch between Light House and Poonamallee, passengers will go to level 2 to get a ticket and then come up to level one to board the train once it is operational. Marina beach will be easily accessible to visitors from all over the city. Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) clearances have already been obtained by CMRL.

Unlike other stations where passengers can go as deep as 20 metres, this station’s maximum depth will be 15 metres. The concourse will be built on the second level, and the platform will be built on the first level, with a depth of about 12 metres. They didn’t want to use tunnel boring machines below the 12-meter mark, so they didn’t.

While one entrance and exit will be near Queen Mary’s College, the other will be near Light House, and the space will be small, measuring about 70-80 metres in length and resembling a subway. The station’s entry and exit structures will be designed to provide a view of the beach as well. While the platform will be 140 metres long, the station will be around 300 metres long due to facilities like stabling and crossover, according to an official spokesperson.
