ArcelorMittal’s 1GW Green Energy Project Begins Power Supply to AM/NS India

ArcelorMittal’s largest renewable energy project in Andhra Pradesh, a 1GW solar and wind project, has started providing clean power to AM/NS India, aiming to reduce carbon emissions by 1.5 million tones annually.

The India renewables project, a hybrid system combining solar and wind capacity with a hydro-pumped storage solution, is set to deliver 250MW of power, covering 20% of AM/NS India’s steel plant’s energy needs The solar site spans 2,400 acres, accommodating over 1,700 football fields, and the wind site covers 700 acres.

Generating 2.5 billion kWh of power annually, enough to power 10 million Indian households ArcelorMittal CEO Aditya Mittal announced the successful completion of the India project, one of its major renewable energy projects, in 18 months. The project, which provides clean electricity to AM/NS India, is one of the fastest projects of its scale in India.

ArcelorMittal is developing 2.3GW of renewable energy projects in India, Brazil, and Argentina, with an expected $1.9 billion annual EBITDA by 2027 In a landmark move for sustainable industrial development, ArcelorMittal has commenced power supply from its 1 gigawatt (GW) renewable energy project to AM/NS India, the company’s.

Joint venture with Japan’s Nippon Steel. This significant development marks the all integration of large-scale green energy into the Indian steel manufacturing process—an industry traditionally known for its heavy carbon emissions.

The renewable energy project, located in the Rajasthan region, has been developed and is being operated by AM Green Energy, a subsidiary of ArcelorMittal. The 1GW project comprises both solar and wind energy installations, designed to produce consistent and sustainable electricity. This project is a part of ArcelorMittal’s global strategy to decarbonize steel production and reduce its environmental footprint across its value chain.

The green power generated will primarily supply AM/NS India’s integrated steel facility at Hazira in Gujarat, one of the country’s largest flat steel production plants. By transitioning to renewable energy for a significant portion of its operations, AM/NS India is expected to cut down its carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 1.5 million tonnes annually, thereby contributing meaningfully India’s climate goals.

A Commitment to Low-Carbon Steelmaking

This initiative is aligned with ArcelorMittal’s broader goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and represents one of the most ambitious industrial green energy transitions in India to date. It also underscores the steel giant’s commitment to transforming traditional manufacturing with clean and renewable technologies.

Speaking on the development, Lakshmi Mittal, Executive Chairman of ArcelorMittal, remarked This milestone underscores our belief that green steel is not only possible but essential. Powering AM/NS India with renewable energy is a crucial step in our mission to make steel more sustainable while ensuring long-term industrial competitiveness.”

Boost to India’s Clean Energy Mission

The project also aligns with the Government of India’s renewable energy targets, including achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. The integration of such a massive green energy supply into core manufacturing will also encourage other industrial sectors to accelerate their energy transition efforts.

This development is expected to stimulate further investment in renewable energy infrastructure, enhance job creation in green sectors, strengthen India’s ArcelorMittal has commenced supplying clean electricity to its Indian joint venture, AM/NS India, from a newly commissioned 1GW hybrid renewable energy project in Andhra Pradesh. Developed by AM Green.

The commissioning of the 1GW green energy project for AM/NS India marks a new chapter in India’s industrial decarbonization journey. As global supply chains demand more sustainable practices, ArcelorMittal’s initiative sets a strong precedent for integrating renewable energy in manufacturing shaping a greener future.
