Smart Cities float tenders for ₹1,62,908cr projects

As of January 21, 2022, Smart City has tendered 6,721 projects worth Rs 1,88,507 crore, Joint Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri informed. Out of 6,721 tenders, work orders have been issued for 6,124 projects involving an investment of Rs 162,908 crore and 3,421 projects worth Rs 58,735 crore completed. As of January 21, 2022, the central government has issued Rs 28,413.6 crore for 100 smart cities, of which Rs 23,668.27 crore (83%) has been used.

The government launched the Smart Cities Mission (SCM) on June 25, 2015, and 100 smart cities were selected through 4 rounds of competition between January 2016 and June 2018. According to the SCM guidelines, the central government should provide financial support to smart cities. Rs 48,000 crore in five years, or an average of Rs 100 crore per city per year. State/Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) make equal contributions. As of now, the government has not considered proposals to add more cities under the SCM.
