10 Lakh Homes Solar-Powered under PM Surya Ghar Yojana

PMSGMBY, India’s largest domestic rooftop solar initiative, has reached 10 lakh homes, transforming India’s energy landscape. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February 2024.

The scheme has disbursed ₹4,770 crore in subsidies to 6.13 lakh beneficiaries. With easy financing options, collateral-free loans, and zero electricity bills, the scheme is empowering people and driving India towards a cleaner, greener future.

The Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY), launched on February 13, 2024, has achieved a significant milestone by powering over 10 lakh (1 million) homes with rooftop solar installations as of March 10, 2025.

This initiative underscores India’s commitment to sustainable energy and aims to transform the residential electricity landscape by enabling households to generate their own power.

Scheme Overview

PMSGMBY is the world’s largest domestic rooftop solar initiative, targeting the installation of solar panels on 1 crore (10 million) households by March 2027.

The scheme offers subsidies of up to ₹78,000 for rooftop solar installations, making solar energy more accessible and affordable for Indian households. Beneficiaries receive direct bank transfers of the subsidy amount within 15 days, ensuring a seamless and transparent process.

To qualify for the scheme, applicants must:

  • Be Indian citizens.
  • Own a legal residential property with sufficient rooftop space for solar panel installation.
  • Have a valid electricity connection.
  • Not have previously availed any other solar panel subsidy from the government.

The subsidy support is structured based on average monthly power consumption:

Implementation and Impact

  • Notably, 45% of households with installed solar panels are now experiencing zero electricity bills, reflecting significant savings and energy independence.

Future Projections

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has outlined an ambitious roadmap for the scheme Interested individuals can apply through the official National Portal for Rooftop Solar.

  • 20 lakh installations by October 2025.
  • 40 lakh installations by March 2026.
  • Achieving the target of 1 crore installations by March 2027.

Registration Process

  1. Filling out the application form on the portal.
  2. Verification of eligibility and approval.
  3. Installation of solar panels by government-registered vendors.
  4. Disbursement of the subsidy directly into the applicant’s bank account within 15 days.

The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana represents a transformative step towards sustainable energy adoption in India. By empowering households to generate their own electricity, the scheme not only reduces dependence on conventional power.
