Karnataka plans R&D centre to boost granite mining amid industry challenges

Karnataka may soon have a dedicated R&D centre in Chamarajanagar district for skill training of personnel for granite mining. The Federation of Indian Granite and Stone Industry (FIGSI) president, Krishna Prasad, requested the state government to allot two acres of land.

Chamarajanagar for the R&D centre. The industry has been facing challenges for the last decade, including high royalty on granite, a ban on Chinese visas, and the closure of around 300 mines due to the old mining policy. The state ranks fourth in granite mining in India after.

Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh. The Federation is strictly following sustainability and environmental guidelines and has allowed mining waste to be dumped within a 3-km radius of quarries. The 16th edition of the bi-annual STONA, the third largest international stone fair, is host to over 3,500 stalls with country pavilions from 18 countries.

The Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill, passed in the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council, has been met with opposition from the BJP and JDS MLCs. The bill, which proposes the creation of up to seven corporations, was discussed by the members, with opposition leader Chalavadi Narayanaswamy questioning.

authority’s ability to curtail the rights of elected representatives. Narayanaswamy argued that creating seven corporations would divide the city and suggested increasing the number of corporators and tightening administration. JDS MLC Sharavana.

TA questioned the necessity of having multiple mayors for the city and the potential for language-related issues. Opposition Chief Whip N Ravi Kumar suggested that the government should focus on addressing key issues by establishing committees and giving more powers to zonal commissioners. The bill was passed, despite opposition members staging a walkout claiming it lacked clarity.

Karnataka, one of India’s leading granite-producing states, is planning to set up a dedicated Research and Development (R&D) centre to strengthen the granite mining sector. This initiative aims to enhance productivity, improve sustainability, and address key challenges faced by the industry, such as declining exports, regulatory hurdles, and environmental concerns.

  • Enhancing Extraction Techniques: Developing advanced methods to minimize waste and improve efficiency in granite quarrying. Research on eco-friendly mining practices, water conservation, and land reclamation. Encouraging the use of technology for better cutting, polishing, and finishing to make Indian granite more competitive in global markets.
  • Providing specialized training to workers on modern machinery and safety practices.

Addressing Industry Challenges

The granite industry in Karnataka has been facing multiple challenges, including: Lengthy approval processes and restrictions on quarrying have impacted production. Competition from countries like China and Brazil has affected India’s share in global granite exports. Unregulated quarrying has led to environmental degradation and legal disputes.

The R&D centre will work closely with industry stakeholders, academic institutions, and government bodies to create innovative solutions and streamline policies for sustainable growth.

By investing in research and development, Karnataka aims to revitalize its granite mining sector, boost exports, and create employment opportunities. The initiative will play a crucial role in making India’s granite industry more competitive, efficient, and environmentally responsible.
