MoRTH Issues ₹764 Cr Tender for Bridges in Arunachal Pradesh

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has issued a tender for the construction of bridges across the Dibang and Lohit River systems in Arunachal Pradesh. This project, with an estimated cost of ₹764 crore, aims to enhance connectivity in the region by linking areas between Chowkham-Digaru and Bomjur-Meka.

Project Overview

The tender invites bids for the construction of multiple bridges over the Dibang and Lohit rivers, including the development of approach roads. These infrastructures are part of the Arunachal Pradesh Package under the Special Accelerated Road Development Programme for North Eastern Region (SARDP-NE). The initiative seeks to improve transportation networks, thereby fostering socio-economic development in the northeastern state.

Scope of Work

The project’s scope encompasses the design, engineering, procurement, construction, and maintenance of the bridges and associated approach roads. The selected contractor will be responsible for ensuring that the structures meet national standards and are capable of withstanding the region’s challenging terrain and climatic conditions.

Significance of the Project

Arunachal Pradesh’s topography, characterized by numerous rivers and hilly terrains, often poses challenges to seamless transportation. The construction of these bridges is expected to:

  • Enhance Connectivity: Provide reliable links between remote areas, facilitating easier movement of people and goods.
  • Boost Economic Activities: Improve access to markets, healthcare, and educational institutions, thereby uplifting local economies.
  • Strengthen National Security: Ensure better accessibility to border areas, which is crucial from a strategic defense standpoint.

Background and Funding

This project is part of the broader Arunachal Pradesh Package for Roads and Highways, announced in 2008 to bolster infrastructure in the state. The package aims to develop approximately 2,319 km of roads, including national highways and strategic roads. As of March 2019, projects covering 2,047 km had been awarded, with 928 km completed. The entire package is targeted for completion by 2023-24, with an estimated expenditure of ₹30,315 crore.

Bidders must submit their proposals by the specified deadline, after which the evaluation process will commence.

The issuance of this ₹764 crore tender underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure in Arunachal Pradesh. By constructing these vital bridges over the Dibang and Lohit rivers, the project aims to significantly improve connectivity, stimulate economic growth, and reinforce national security in the northeastern region.
