Cottonpet Main Road is one of the main roads in the congested central business district. There are frequent vehicular traffic. Now it will be transformed. It will be developed under Tender SURE (Urban Road Implementation Specification).
Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will develop roads connecting the city center with Mysuru Road, Chamarajpete and other areas in southern Bangalore.
BBMP sources confirmed that the 1.13 kilometer long road will begin soon, starting with the transfer of public utilities.
Cottonpete Main Road has recently become news after it collapsed near Super Talkies.
The road passes through the secondary rainwater drain. The sewer has a history of nearly a hundred years. One of the plates covering the drain pipe collapsed. This caused the road to collapse.
BBMP officials stated that the entire underground drainage pipeline is located in a secondary drainage pipe nearly 10 feet below the surface. “We have solved this problem. The drain pipe was connected to a 900 mm diameter RCC pipe, which was later backfilled with wet mixed gravel (WMM) and quarry dust. The road was opened to vehicles shortly afterwards,” The source said.
This road is one of the six major roads and nearly a dozen crossroads, with a total length of 9.81 kilometers, located in the market area being developed by Majestic and K.R. under TenderSURE. BBMP officials stated that the work order was issued in September 2017. The road development work is likely to be completed in September 2019. Explaining the need to develop these congested roads, the source said that many roads have different lanes. These areas have also witnessed a lot of crowds. Through development under TenderSURE, the traffic lanes will be standardized and the sidewalks will be improved for the benefit of pedestrians.
The source also said that the width of the existing sidewalk is between 1.2 meters and 2.5 meters and will be increased to 1.5 meters to 3.5 meters. Drainage lines and water pipes will be moved to both sides of the road, and the entire road section will be lit by LED street lights 25 meters apart on both sides.
BBMP sources said that the traffic police have approved to take over the work. The source said that the road will be closed during the construction period, and the traffic police will notify the alternative route soon.
However, not everyone is satisfied with development. Trade activist Sajjan Raj Mehta said that BBMP should first have dialogue with traders on the road. “When developing roads such as Church Street and St. Mark’s Road, civic groups obeyed all the rules. Why are traders in the Majestic and Chikpete areas ignored?” he said.
