To comfort commuters in the western suburbs, two subway lines under construction-Metro-2A (Dahisar-Aarey) and Metro-7 (Dahanukarwadi to Aarey)-will be put into operation in January 2022. The first phase of the two routes will begin in October this year, the Mumbai Metropolitan Development Authority (MMRDA) announced on Friday.

The head of MMRDA RA Rajeev said that the trial operation of the two lines will begin on Monday. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray (Uddhav Thackeray) will start the trial operation on Monday.

Metro-2A will connect Dahisar and DN Nagar with 16 stations in the middle, while Metro-7 will connect Dahisar (East) and Andheri (East), and there will be 13 stations. The two routes will provide considerable comfort to people traveling in the western suburbs.

“The two lines will be fully operational in January next year. It will reduce the load on local trains by approximately 10% to 12%, and it will also significantly reduce travel time,” Rajeev said.

The subway will run at a speed of 80 kilometers per hour. “We will start trial operation on Monday and will complete it in October. After that, the first phase will be operational from October,” he added. The total cost of the two subway lines is about 128 billion rupees, of which about 60 billion rupees have been spent so far. It is estimated that once the two lines are opened, there will be 920,000 trips.

Both lines are expected to be put into operation in December last year, but the Covid-19 pandemic and the resulting blockade caused delays. After the blockade was lifted, MMRDA stepped up its work.

MMRDA is the node authority for the Mumbai Metro Master Plan, which hopes to implement a 337-kilometer network in the city and its surrounding areas. MMRDA is also implementing the Mumbai Cross-Harbour Link (MTHL), a 22-kilometer sea bridge connecting Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.

In 2014, Mumbai opened the first metro linking the suburbs of Versova, Ghatkopar and Andheri.
