Google has successfully acquired Cameyo, a software virtualization startup with which it entered into a partnership in 2023 to enable Windows apps to run on ChromeOS. “By bringing the Cameyo team’s expertise in-house, we are doubling down on our commitment to delivering a streamlined experience for virtualized applications,” Google stated in a news release issued by the firm.
Google and Cameyo teamed in 2023 to provide local file system functionality for virtual applications running on ChromeOS. Google improved the clipboard support for these virtual apps with Cameyo’s assistance. Since the American software behemoth purchased Cameyo, users of Chromebooks now have simpler access to Windows apps that have been virtualized on their devices.

For a long time, companies have operated virtual apps or old versions of apps (legacy apps) on their systems without installing them by using virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) technologies. But this procedure necessitates specialization and presents management and security challenges for the businesses.
Cameyo employs Virtual Application Delivery (VAD) technology in place of VDI. With this method, virtual apps can operate on ChromeOS without requiring a Windows desktop emulator or difficult installation processes. These programs show up as progressive web apps (PWA) on ChromeOS, which facilitates simple file system integration.
From a customer perspective, the VAD model streamlines app administration and enables enterprises to maintain software updates with enhanced security.
