Zinc demand in India likely to double in next 5-10 years

Delhi, New Delhi The International Zinc Association stated on Sunday that due to significant investments in the steel and infrastructure sectors, zinc demand in India is anticipated to quadruple over the next five to ten years. Due to zinc’s primary application in galvanising steel to prevent corrosion, the demand for zinc in India is mostly influenced by the expansion of the steel industry.

“In the next five to ten years, I anticipate that the demand for zinc will double. With all the improvements we are seeing in India, the market for primary and refined zinc in that country, which is now close to 800–1,000 tonnes (per annum), has a big possibility to grow.

Huge expenditures are being made to increase steel capacity, and galvanised coatings are still necessary to safeguard steel. We observe that several plans and investments for new galvanising lines are underway. Thus, I anticipate zinc playing a significant role in India,” Global Director of the International Zinc Association Martin Van Leeuwen said in a conversation with PTI.

India now needs between 800 and 1,000 tonnes of zinc annually.

He stated that India has very low zinc usage and that the nation’s per capita zinc consumption is much below the global average at about 0.5 kg.

The amount of zinc used per person in India is around half a kilogramme. In comparison, the average worldwide is almost four kilos per person. Furthermore, it can reach six or seven kilos per capita in affluent nations like the US, Europe, and Korea,” he said.

Regarding zinc’s prospects for the present year, he stated that there appears to be a huge potential for zinc in 2024 given the global shift to green energy and the rapid rise of solar photovoltaics (PV).

The energy transformation is presenting us with some fantastic zinc application options. We are seeing investments in wind energy and solar PV, and both of those fields require a lot of zinc to safeguard the steel supports. Zinc is also used to protect the wind energy towers, particularly those that are situated at sea.He said, “We see tremendous progress and a fantastic chance for zinc.
