50 per cent of construction work of Ram temple complete; shrine to open to devotees in Jan 2024: Champat Rai

As of February 2025, the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya has reached significant milestones, with the sanctum sanctorum already open to devotees since January 2024. The comprehensive development of the temple complex is projected to conclude by September 2025.

Progress and Milestones

In October 2022, Champat Rai, the general secretary of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, announced that 50% of the temple’s construction had been completed. He projected that the temple would open to devotees in January 2024, coinciding with the installation of the Ram Lalla idol in the sanctum sanctorum during the Makar Sankranti festival.

True to this timeline, the sanctum sanctorum was inaugurated in January 2024, allowing devotees to offer prayers. This event marked a significant spiritual milestone, even as construction continued on other parts of the complex.

Construction Details

The Ram Temple is being constructed at an estimated cost of ₹1,800 crore. The main temple structure is designed with dimensions of 350 feet in length and 250 feet in width, featuring a towering spire reaching 161 feet. The construction employs high-quality sandstone and marble, with intricate carvings that reflect ancient temple architecture.

In October 2024, the construction of the temple’s 161-feet-high spire commenced, with an expected completion by February 2025. Additionally, the installation of idols in the Sapta Mandir within the complex is scheduled to be completed by December 2024.

Challenges and Revised Timelines

Despite initial projections to complete the entire temple complex by June 2025, unforeseen challenges, including a shortage of skilled stone carvers, have extended the timeline. In November 2024, Nripendra Mishra, chairman of the temple’s construction committee, indicated that the full completion is now anticipated by September 2025.

Impact on Ayodhya

The inauguration of the sanctum sanctorum has significantly boosted religious tourism in Ayodhya. Visitor numbers have surged from 60 lakh in 2020 to an astounding 16 crore in 2024. This influx has spurred economic growth, leading to increased investments in infrastructure, hospitality, and related sectors.

Future Plans

As the temple complex nears completion, plans are underway to commemorate the first anniversary of the sanctum sanctorum’s consecration in January 2025. The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, under the leadership of Champat Rai, is organizing events to celebrate this milestone, reflecting on the progress made and the spiritual significance of the temple.

In summary, the Ram Temple in Ayodhya stands as a testament to devotion and architectural excellence. With the sanctum sanctorum already serving devotees and the full completion of the complex on the horizon, the temple continues to inspire and attract pilgrims from around.
