During the first quarter of FY 2024–2025, the Indian government operationalised four significant projects in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh as part of the Namami Gange Mission 2.0. These projects add 145 MLD of sewage treatment capacity at a total cost of ₹920 crores.
A ₹366 crore project in Munger, Bihar, comprises a 30 MLD STP and a 175 km sewerage network. A ₹129 crore project in Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh, adds two additional STPs and intercepts nine drains to increase treatment capacity to 31 MLD.
A ₹153 crore project featuring a 1.3 km I&D network and a 21 MLD STP was undertaken in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh. A ₹271 crore project in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, added three STPs with a total capacity of 63 MLD and intercepted 15 drains. These programs seek.
In a significant advancement under the Namami Gange Mission 2.0, the Government of India has successfully operationalized four major projects in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar during the first quarter of the fiscal year 2024-25. With a combined investment of ₹920 crore, these initiatives aim to enhance sewage treatment capacity by 145 million liters per day (MLD), improve sewer networks, and intercept numerous drains, thereby contributing to the rejuvenation and conservation of the River Ganga.
Project Details
- Munger, Bihar: This project focuses on upgrading the sewer network and establishing a 30 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at an estimated cost of ₹366 crore. The development includes constructing a 175 km sewerage network, benefiting approximately 300,000 residents by connecting households to the sewer system, enhancing urban sanitation, and preventing the discharge of untreated sewage into the Ganga.
- Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh: Aimed at reducing pollution in the Ganga, this ₹129 crore project involves intercepting nine drains and rehabilitating six existing structures. The initiative has increased the sewage treatment capacity to 31 MLD through the construction of two new 8.5 MLD STPs at Pakka Pokhara and Bisunderpur, along with the rehabilitation of existing facilities.
- Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh: With an investment of ₹153 crore, this project focuses on intercepting, diverting, and treating sewage to curb pollution in the Ganga. The operational components include developing a 1.3 km interception and diversion network and constructing a 21 MLD STP, effectively treating sewage and preventing the flow of untreated waste into the river.
- Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh: This significant project, costing ₹271 crore, targets pollution abatement in the Ramganga River, a tributary of the Ganga. It encompasses the interception and diversion of 15 drains and the construction of three STPs with a combined capacity of 63 MLD. The initiative ensures that urban sewage is treated before discharge, thereby improving the water quality of both the Ramganga and Ganga rivers. pib.gov.in
Technological and Environmental Impact
These projects are implemented using the Design, Build, Operate, and Transfer (DBOT) model and are based on advanced Sequencing Batch Reactor technology. The STPs are designed to meet stringent discharge standards set by the National Green Tribunal, ensuring significant improvements in the water quality of the Ganga and its tributaries.
By effectively treating wastewater and preventing the discharge of untreated sewage, these initiatives not only enhance the ecological health of the river system but also contribute to the well-being of the urban populations in the respective regions.
The successful completion and operationalization of these projects underscore the government’s commitment to preserving the sanctity of the Ganga and ensuring a cleaner, healthier environment for future generations.
